People are everything

Ask anyone “what is the greatest resource in their business ?” and 90% will say “our people”.

“Our people” is about the people we bring into the business and what we do with them once they are there.

Isn’t it then strange that 35% of interviewers make the decision to hire someone in less than 5 minutes? Slightly more than 50% make their decision about a candidate within 5 and 15 minutes. Which probably explains why most interviewers get it so wrong so many times.

This might not be so serious unless you happen to believe what Lou Gerstner famously said during his tenure as CEO of IBM. “In the end, an organization is nothing more than the collective capacity of its people to create value.”

Business guru and author of “Good to Great”, Jim Collins, said “If I were running a company today, I would have one priority above all others: to acquire as many of the best people as I could.  I’d put off everything else to fill my bus.” Collins believes this is more important than strategy.

The above quote from Lou Gerstner highlights another dynamic that doesn’t receive sufficient attention when recruiting. That is the need for people to work together. Just how will the newbie fit into the existing team?
